William A. Brewer III
Bickel & Brewer
Bickel & Brewer was founded with a singular idea – to become the world’s leading firm handling “bet-the-
business” litigation and dispute resolution. twenty-plus years
later, the vision remains the same – to represent clients
confronting matters that involve substantial business exposure,
cutting-edge legal issues, or significant public policy questions.
Driven by the Desire to Practice Advocacy
at the Highest Level
“We have never wavered from the commitment we made
to ourselves at the outset – to handle only those matters in
which our skills are most likely to add value,” says partner
William A. Brewer iii.
Under Brewer’s direction, the firm has become known
for its progressiveness. Bickel & Brewer utilizes an in-house
consulting group, a state-of-the-art information management
system and an in-house investigation unit. in addition, an
offshore operation allows the firm to cost-effectively build
electronic libraries and information retrieval systems vital to
handling the largest cases today.
“We have always believed that of our clients should benefit
from every strategic advantage possible,” Brewer says. “the
firm is tireless in its pursuit of anything that helps us better
serve our clients’ interests.”
the success of the firm’s practice is evidenced in the news
organizations that chronicle the firm and its cases. in the past
few months alone, The Wall Street Journal, The New York
Times, Forbes and the Associated press, to name a few, have
all reported on matters handled by the firm. in May, the firm was
the subject of an editorial profile in The National Law Journal.
A Commitment to the Community
Although best known for its advocacy, Bickel & Brewer
commands widespread attention for its commitment to
the community. the Bickel & Brewer Foundation creates,
funds and manages a wide range of educational, legal and
community programs.
As an example, the Foundation developed the Bickel
& Brewer / n YU international public policy Forum (ippF) as
a debate contest that annually involves thousands of high
school students from across the world. in 2001, the Foundation
created the Bickel & Brewer Future leaders program (Flp), an
academic, leadership development and enrichment program
william A. Brewer lll
that benefits students typically from economically disadvan-
taged circumstances. the Bickel & Brewer latino institute for
Human rights at new York University School of law is a ground-
breaking initiative aimed at training future generations of public
advocates. the institute awards full scholarships to aspiring
lawyers in the public service arena, and provides a forum for the
exchange of ideas and scholarship regarding our nation’s grow-
ing diversification. in november, the institute and its scholars
will conduct an inaugural symposium to explore legal and public
policy issues that are critical to our nation’s latino community.
“one of our greatest privileges is seeing the graduates of the
institute make a difference in the community,” Brewer says. “We
believe in their ability to effect positive legal and social change.”
“the inspiration here for each of our professionals is
the opportunity to practice at the highest level on a
docket of the most important matters in the country,”
says partner William A. Brewer iii, who, in 1984,
founded Bickel & Brewer with partners John W. Bickel
ii and James S. renard. “For us, high-stakes advocacy
has always been considered an art form.”
Brewer is a driving force behind Bickel & Brewer’s
commitment to be the best. the firm prides itself on
its handling of cases that involve substantial business
and financial exposure, cutting-edge legal issues or
significant public-policy questions. With offices in
new York and dallas (and a subsidiary in india), the
firm is uniquely positioned to represent clients
from across the United States and every corner of
the globe.
Innovative
progressive and cutting-edge, Bickel & Brewer has
made seismic contributions to the field of commercial
litigation. it was among the first firms to develop an
in-house consulting group, commission the develop-
ment of a state-of-the-art information management
system, and develop an offshore operation. Brewer
directs an in-house public relations unit to help
clients protect and advance their interests in the
court of public opinion, and he made national headlines
for developing one of the nation’s first in-house
investigation units. He and his partners were pioneers
in the advancement of alternative fee arrangements.
“the firm’s docket includes Fortune 500 corporations,
entrepreneurs and leading firms in a wide array of
industries,” Brewer says. “We are driven by the desire
to make sure they benefit from every competitive
advantage imaginable.”
Committed to the Community
Bickel & Brewer’s professional drive is matched by its
well-known commitment to the community. the firm
creates, manages and funds a wide range of legal and
educational programs. the Bickel & Brewer Future
leaders program lights a path to college for students
from the dallas independent School district. the Bickel
& Brewer / n YU international public policy Forum is
a global debate contest now celebrating its tenth
anniversary. And the Bickel & Brewer latino institute for
Human rights at n YU School of law is a groundbreaking
initiative aimed at training future generations of public
advocates. these programs are complemented by the
Bickel & Brewer Storefront, a community affiliate that
provides legal representation to individuals, businesses
and non-profit entities in need.
“one of our great privileges is the opportunity to
be involved in such a broad array of public interest
programs,” Brewer says. “Any credit for the success of
this work goes to the students, clients and community
partners who make it all possible.”
